yghiatdi Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Hi all great website, still looking around. In the meantime can anyone help with this. I have a 2001 tdi ghia (115) I travel 12 miles to work mainly through country side but the last 3 miles in traffic at a very slow speed and when I arrive the temperature guage has not moved passed the 50 mark. The heater seems warm though. Is this correct? can I do anything to get the temp up to normal quicker?Cheers Ian Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 May be worth changing the thermostat? - or is the temp sender faulty? If you go on a longer journey, does the gauge move further? On my 5 mile drive to work, the temp gauge usually moves but doesn't get to "normal" but on way home, 7 miles including 1 mile of motorway, it does get to mid-position on the gauge. Quote
yghiatdi Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 Thanks I had thought about the thermostat and may change it anyway. My gal does not appear to get warm on tickover and possibly cools down! Quote
Guest blatters Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Also, check to see if your aux heater / booster heater is working. There's tons written about this on the web site. It should work after a few minutes on a cold morning (say, below around 8c). You can tell if it is running because it will sound like a whining jet engine just under the nearside rear door in front of the rear n/side wheel. You may also hear a ticking noise or see a little exhaust coming from the small exhaust just by the rear n/side wheel (this is not always the case though but the jet sound is a solid clue). The diesel engine is very efficient. If it's cold and you're not driving it very hard then this aux heater kicks in and helps heat the engine up to around 90c, normal. If it is not working then the engine will take much longer to warm up and, if you ease off the pace (say, lift from the throttle when going downhill for a while) the engine temp will actually start to drop back to the quarter zone.My aux heater packed up and I realised it when the temp gauge needle struggled up to normal and then started easing back on descents. Dealer fixed under warranty. There is also a modification recently available. See the thread 'aux heater tapping and smoking' on the Technical Section for more details. The dealer tells me they have had a couple of calls from other Ford garages and are quite happy to help out over the 'phone if your dealer has not heard of the Ford fix etc.Regards....Blatters ;) Quote
